Harold and Maude - If you want to sing out, sing out

After spending more time with her, he finds himself in love with her. However, a barrage of authority-i.

Harold's militaristic uncle comes across as comical in his war-mongering vices-right down to his armless right sleeve that salutes when he pulls the string.

In addition to the swarm of brides-to-be, she tries to pacify him with material possessions-including a spanking-new Jaguar convertible, which he converts into a hearse.

Cat Stevens' open-air, acoustic-driven rock 'n' roll provides the soundtrack for the film. It gives the film a decent organic sound indicative of its demeanor.

This is a film that chases happiness wherever it can be found with a Woodstock-sense of responsibility.

Maude's vices of vehicular larceny and bong smoking match Harold's love of fake hara-kiris and hearses. However what the film lacks in reality, it makes up for in heart.

This movie is not meant to be taken seriously; it's only to break down paradigms of societal thought. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show.

Young, rich, and obsessed with death, Harold finds himself changed forever when he meets lively septuagenarian Maude at a funeral. Funny, somewhat relatable, believable script and great acting for this period in time.

The plot was not accepted then nor now for women but all things are possible for many different reasons. Take it lightly and be open to the relative situations in this film.

Agree with all the reviews that hail this film as a sleeper classic. Watching it in my late teens was a liberating experience, the soundtrack seminal.

Just want to add that Harold's mother, played by Vivian Pickles, is one of my all-time favorite characters--she is absolutely hilarious and I've never seen anything quite like her "Survey--do you find the idea of wife-swapping distasteful?

This in a film full of quirky and zany characters. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English.

This was clearly stated in the description and I was fully aware of it at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the product description carefully before ordering to avoid disappointment.

The film has become a veritable cult classic since its release in It's a hilarious black comedy and the ultimate May-December romance all rolled into one.

Harold is twenty, spoiled, filthy rich, and bored with life. Maude is a lively lady in her very late seventies. They meet at a funeral and form an unlikely friendship from the moment the free spirited Maude goes joyriding in Harold's private hearse.

Everything about the film is utterly outrageous, from the characters, their relationship and Harold's macabre "hobby" to Maude's utter disregard for conventions and property.

Both deliver delightfully OTT performances. It's cheesy, it's campy, it's funny as hell, it's one of the most enjoyable films I've ever seen.

An absolute gem. The Cat Stevens soundtrack is legendary to boot. Harold and Maude is one of our great modern fairy tales.

It says love and freedom are two sides of the same coin. Where one is absent, so is the other, neither able to exist in isolation without the other.

Some may call this a romantic conceit, others a fact of life. I happen to be in the latter camp. The love shown in this film is one that sets a person free.

Maude is 79, nearing her 80th birthday. For kicks she joy rides, stealing cars, driving recklessly, burning rubber with police sirens wailing behind her.

Harold is 18 and likes funerals too, but for different reasons. He hates his mother, himself, life. His lone hobby, apart from attending funerals, is staging mock suicides.

He hangs himself, slashes his wrists in the bath, lops off a hand with a meat cleaver, shoots himself in the mouth with a handgun, sets himself on fire in the back garden and commits ritual hara kiri with a sharp samurai sword, seemingly disemboweling himself.

He also floats face down in the family swimming pool, holding his breath for superhuman amounts of time in an effort to appear dead.

In lieu of this missing emotion, she showers wealthy gifts on him. Maude lives in an old abandoned railway carriage with an odd assortment of collected things: stuffed animals, flowers, musical instruments, and a machine that replicates fragrances, or what she calls her odorifics.

Eccentric may be the telling adjective with her. Death brings Harold and Maude together at the funeral of yet another stranger. In this way death acts as go-between in their friendship, one which will quickly blossom into love for Harold, as Maude is the only sentient and creative being he has ever met.

Education for him was boarding school. Home is prison. He loves it. It feels like home, a real home. The objects inside are unique, interesting, personal.

They all have stories behind them which Maude, forever happy to talk, generously informs Harold of. Naturally, he falls in love with Maude.

Age is meaningless, spirit and character everything. Maude is flattered, but keeps things light and platonic. Instead of lovemaking, they do other things together.

They even steal a police motorcycle from a cop and leave the officer standing in their dust. They have a picnic. They eat and drink and talk to the birds.

Harold yells like Tarzan and does somersaults. Then, overjoyed, he carries Maude on his back and runs through a field. He also plays the banjo, a musical instrument Maude has given to him.

And of course they still go to funerals, sitting through the dreary church services and standing in the rain at cemeteries.

But things at home are as bad as ever for Harold. In fact, they are getting worse. Mother is worried about Harold. She thinks his suicidal antics have been going too far.

Such as marriage, Mama informs him. To this end a string of computer dates from a dating service parade through their opulent mansion.

They all love the building, setting, landscaping, decor, atmosphere. Cold fish or not, Harold is popular. All the young women profess to be keenly interested in him.

That is, until Harold pulls the trigger again with the gun to his head or pulls off some other seemingly deadly prank in their midst.

The psychiatrist can make no headway because Harold remains clammed up. In desperation, she thinks his Uncle Victor, a military man, can talk him into joining the army.

This fails. Harold pretends to be a gung-ho lunatic who wants to shoot, scalp, dismember and eat the enemy. Even for Uncle Victor, a red-white-and-blue racist and jingoist, this is too much.

Uncle Victor declares Harold unfit for duty. At a stranger's funeral service, Harold meets Maude, a seventy-nine-year-old woman who shares Harold's hobby of attending funerals.

He is entranced by her quirky outlook on life, which is bright and excessively carefree in contrast with his morbidity. Maude lives in a decommissioned railroad car.

She thinks nothing of breaking the law, including stealing cars, uprooting a tree from a public space to re-plant it, speeding, and parking on a city sidewalk.

She and Harold form a bond and Maude shows Harold the pleasures of art and music including how to play banjo , and teaches him how to make "the most of his time on earth.

One by one, Harold frightens and horrifies each of his appointed dates, by appearing to commit gruesome acts such as self-immolation , self-mutilation and seppuku.

His mother tries enlisting him in the military by sending him to his uncle, who had served under General MacArthur in the Second World War and lost an arm, but Harold deters his recruiting-officer uncle by staging a scene in which Maude poses as a pacifist protester and Harold seemingly murders her out of militarist fanaticism.

When Harold and Maude talk at her home he tells her, without prompting, the motive for his fake suicides: when he was at boarding school, he accidentally caused an explosion in his chemistry lab, leading police to assume that he had been killed.

Harold had returned home just in time to witness his mother react to the news of his death by faking a ludicrously dramatized fainting.

As he reaches this part of the story, Harold bursts into tears and says, "I decided then I enjoyed being dead. As they become closer, their friendship blossoms into a romance.

Holding her hand, Harold discovers a number tattooed on her forearm, meaning that Maude is a survivor of the German Nazi death camps. Harold announces that he will marry Maude, resulting in disgusted outbursts from his family, analyst, and priest.

Unbeknownst to Harold, Maude is secretly planning to commit suicide on her eightieth birthday. Maude's birthday arrives, and Harold throws a surprise party for her.

As the couple dance, Maude tells Harold that she "couldn't imagine a lovelier farewell. She restates her firm belief that eighty is the proper age to die.

Harold rushes Maude to the hospital, where she refuses treatment and dies. In the final sequence, Harold's car is seen going off a seaside cliff but after the crash, the final shot reveals Harold standing calmly atop the cliff, holding his banjo.

Director Hal Ashby appears in an uncredited cameo, watching a model train at an amusement park. While working as producer Edward Lewis's pool boy, Higgins showed the script to Lewis's wife, Mildred.

Mildred was so impressed that she got Edward to give it to Stanley Jaffe at Paramount. Higgins sold the script with the understanding that he would direct the film but he was told he wasn't ready, after tests he shot proved unsatisfactory to the studio heads.

Ashby would only commit to directing the film after getting Higgins' blessing and then, so Higgins could watch and learn from him on the set, Ashby made Higgins a co-producer.

It then became a minute thesis while at film school. After the film came out, the script was turned into a novel then a play, which ran for several years in Paris.

Also on his list were John Rubinstein , for whom Higgins had written the part, and then-up-and-coming British pop star Elton John , whom Ashby had seen live and hoped would also do the music.

Anne Brebner, the casting director, was almost cast as Harold's mother, when Vivian Pickles was briefly unable to do the role.

Harold and Maude received mixed reviews, with several critics being offended by the film's dark humor. Roger Ebert , in a review dated January 1, , gave the film one-and-a-half out of four stars.

He wrote, "And so what we get, finally, is a movie of attitudes. Harold is death, Maude life, and they manage to make the two seem so similar that life's hardly worth the extra bother.

The visual style makes everyone look fresh from the Wax Museum, and all the movie lacks is a lot of day-old gardenias and lilies and roses in the lobby, filling the place with a cloying sweet smell.

Nothing more to report today. Harold doesn't even make pallbearer.

Maude started life in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. She models nude, at that delightful age of 79, and the movie makes clear they have consummated their relationship.

I have seen this over and over since it first played in Boston about 45 years ago. It is still hilarious with its dark humor, touching love interest and insight to the phyche of viewing the world a bit differently.
